1991 BMW 5 Series

For 1991, the BMW M5 was powered by a dual overhead-cam six-cylinder engine displacing 215 cubic-inches and developing 310 horsepower. A five-speed manual and four-speed automatic were available on all 5-Series models, which consisted of the 525i Sedan, the 535i Sedan, and the M5. The 525i models were powered by a 152 cubic-inch engine offering 190 horsepower while the 535i had a 208 horsepower engine.
The 2.5-liter engine in the 525i was a new engine and featured four valves per cylinder along with hydraulic lifters and dual overhead cams. Another change for 1991 included optional traction control available on the 535i models.

BMW's E34 range was launched in October 1988 in North America - but with two 6-cylinder models, the 525i and 535i - for model year 1989. Over the course of the E34 generation two Touring, or wagon, models the 525i and 530i - and two more sedans, the 530i and 540i - were sold in North America after each model had been released in Europe and sometimes the Rest of the world.

This particular example is one of 1,678 produced for North America. The E34 M5 was powered by the S38, inline 6-cylinder engine.
