1974 Chevrolet Corvette Widebody

1974 Chevrolet Corvette Widebody 1974 Chevrolet Corvette Widebody 1974 Chevrolet Corvette Widebody High bid of $300,000 at 2015 Mecum : Monterey. (did not sell)
This 1974 Greenwood Corvette with chassis number 002 is the 'Spirit of Sebring '75', the first and most famous of only six Greenwood wide-body race cars built. It is powered by a Chevrolet L88 big-block race motor and was the only one to be raced as a Greenwood 'team' entry (the other five examples were built for customers). The L88 race motor has a custom Greenwood-specific cross-ram mechanical fuel-injection layout. It was developed by John Greenwood specifically for the wide-body structure. It has the Bob Riley coil-over suspension layout on a Ron Fournier acid-dipped full-frame chassis, the only one created this way. It has a special driver's-seat extension to accommodate Mr. Greenwood's leg (unlike any of the other five Greenwood Widebody race cars). This car is also fitted with a curved dash.

Among the accolades this car holds among the Greenwood cars includes 'most pole positions', 'most race wins', and most 'fast lap' records, plus the overall all-time highest official speed ever recorded by any car at Daytona: 236 MPH. This car is also the most original of the surviving cars, and was never badly damaged nor in a serious accident.

Decorated as car number 48, Milt Minter drove this car to a victory at the Talladega 200. It also won at the Daytona Finale in late 1974, giving Greenwood the season IMSA title, plus poles as six events between 1974 and 1975, among them the 24 Hours at Daytona race in 1975 when it set the record speed.

In recent times, this car has been given a professional restoration bringing it back to race-ready 1975 specifications complete with FIA HTP paperwork. It has the gearing for the higher speeds, the competition-type L88 engine, a 482 CI powerplant with the Greenwood-specific injection layout. The engine made a dyno-proven 718 horsepower and 678 lb-ft of torque.

This car also has an unbroken string of ownership records since Greenwood's origination. It is signed by both John Greenwood and Ron Fournier.
