Sports cars were still in the minority in 1969, while the big powerful cars held a clear majority in the States. Things would change drastically in the years that followed, and the Japanese cars were poised to take advantage of those changes. They gained a good foothold during the 1960s and continued to build towards huge growth in the 1970s. By 1969, the four-cylinder Datsun 1600 engine had grown to 1,595cc with aluminum heads and offering 96 horsepower. With its race car suspension technology and twin caliper disc brakes, it offered superb handling and a top speed in the neighborhood of 103 mph. Around 2,500 examples were imported to the United States in 1969.
