At the 1989 Tokyo Motor Show, Nissan introduced the Figaro. The name was in reference to the title character in the play The Marriage of Figaro by Pierre Beaumarchais. They were based on the Nissan Micra and built at Aichi Machine Industry, a special projects group that would later be called 'Pike Factory' by Nissan. They wore a design that is attributed to Naoki Sakai and/or Shoji Takahashi. They had a fixed top with a fabric soft element that could be retracted, giving it a convertible 'feel.' They were available in four colors including Topaz Mist (Autumn), Emerald Green (Spring), Pale Aqua (Summer), and Lapis Grey (Winter). Nissan built approximately 20,000 examples of the Nissan Figaro for a single year. 8,000 were originally built with an additional 12,000 added to production to meet demand. The 1991 vehicle was a two-door 2+2 fixed-profile convertible and was originally marketed solely in Japan at their Nissan Cherry Stores.
