Olds, in 1897, selling it to Sam Smith who relocated the company to Detroit. As vice president, Olds developed steam, electric and gas-powered vehicles. So far, Olds is the only company to have developed, built, and sold all three modes. In 1904, Ransom left the Olds Motor Vehicle Company and founded the REO Motor Company. By 1907, REO was one of the wealthiest automobile manufacturers in the world. Their success, however, was short-lived, as Ford and General Motors began gaining ground with less expensive and more readily available vehicles.

The REO vehicles built a reputation for their speed, styling, and durability. In 1927, they introduced their Flying Cloud model.

The REO Flying Cloud Mate (Model B-2) was the lower-priced REO model made only in 1929 and served as a replacement for the Wolverine of 1928. In subsequent years, the Mate was marketed as a Flying Cloud Model 15.

REO produced 8,164 examples of the Mate, which was comprised of a 2- and 4-door passenger coupes and 4-door sedans. Standard and sport models were marketed in each style.

The Flying Cloud Mate had a wheelbase of 115 inches and weighed 3,220 lbs. Power was from a Continental 16E Series 6 Cylinder engine offering 60 horsepower. At all four corners were hydraulic brakes.
