2017 Porsche 911 R

2017 Porsche 911 R
A homage. An unadulterated sports car. A radically pure 911. Limited to 991 units. With the raspy sound of a 4.0-litre six-cylinder horizontally opposed and naturally aspirated engine. With 368 kW (500 hp). With a crisp 6-speed GT Sport manual transmission. (posted on conceptcarz.com) With consistent lightweight construction. With unfathomable driving pleasure.

A thoroughbred nine eleven.

I'm not just a Sports Car. I'm much more than that. I'm the R that makes the difference. I'm the 911 that will keep you on your toes. I'm the reason for getting up at 6 a.m. on Sundays after a tough week. I'm the reminder of a lost childhood. I smell of petrol, of asphalt, of the race track. A genuine Sports Car. A thoroughbred nine eleven. Now, I'm back – in a limited edition of only 991 units.

I tick like an analogue watch. I'm honest, straight, direct. A confirmed purist. With the driver at the center. That's why I compete out in the open. For high Sports Car culture.

I am the new 911 R.

Performance

When the tears of joy flow horizontally.

The large-volume flat-six naturally aspirated engine sits right at the back of the new 911 R. Its high-performance unit delivers an impressive maximum engine speed of 8,800 rpm. With its 4-liter displacement it delivers 500 hp, corresponding to an output of 125 hp per liter. The maximum torque is 339 lb.-ft.

With the very short shift travel of the 6-speed GT Sport manual transmission, the 911 R accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in only 3.7 seconds – provided you're nimble with the shift lever. Top track speed in 6th gear: at 200 mph.

Power development of this kind is only possible with a high power-to-weight ratio. With the new 911 R this is a remarkable 6.05 lbs./hp.

Thoroughbred

Sore muscles. From driving.

Step on the clutch, press the accelerator. Release the clutch. Úp to this point, your driving instructor would have no trouble following you. After that, you will realize, he simply wouldn't have a clue. Brief lesson on the power transmission of the new 911: Manual transmission with 6 performance-oriented gears, a rush of adrenalin at each gear change. Your job: Hand- and footwork. Lots of it. The shift travel? Extremely short. Each gear change? Extremely precise.

One thing is certain: With the manual Porsche transmission, you will drive as in the old days. With the driving feel of a genuine GT Sports Car. The dynamic intermediate throttle application function allows your emotions no rest. And the sound will ring in your ears. Regardless of which gear you're in.

Design

Old school. New thrill.

A homage. A rebirth. A childhood dream. A 911 straight out of Flacht. The new 911 R is all of this. All at once. Design and body based on the 911 GT3. However, the 911 R features an extendible rather than a fixed rear wing. In practice, this means: The 911 R is 44 mm wider at the rear than the 911 Carrera. This gives it an even fuller stance on the road. And enhances the classic 911 virtues: low, wide, flat.

Eye-catching: the characteristic engine air intake grill with the historical 911 R model designation. Directly underneath: the centrally positioned Black painted twin tailpipes of the exhaust system. These deliver the unadulterated sound of a thoroughbred naturally aspirated engine.

Historical reference: The 2 stripes that extend along the entire length of the vehicle. Motor sports elegance, if there is such a thing.

Driving dynamics
High culture, lowered.

The chassis of the new 911 R is based on the 911 GT3 and provides extremely sporty day-to-day driving. The tuning is extremely direct and the vehicle lies as low as the 911 GT3. All the chassis control systems have been adapted to the manual transmission. (posted on conceptcarz.com)

At low speeds, the specially adapted system on the new 911 R steers the rear wheels in the opposite direction to the front wheels. This increases agility, particularly in tight bends. During high-speed manoeuvres, the system steers the rear wheels in the same direction as that of the front wheels. This enhances stability, particularly at high driving speeds.

Lightweight construction

2017 Porsche 911 R
Heritage brings obligations.
Lightweight construction is a Porsche tradition. The new 911 R has also gone on a diet. And a serious one. The bonnet and wings of the new 911 R are made from carbon fibre-reinforced plastic, the roof from magnesium, and the rear side windows from polycarbonate. Rear seating area? Omitted. And the manual transmission – instead of an automatic one – pushes the vehicle weight further downwards. Same principle in the interior: Less is more. The climate control and infotainment system have been dispensed with – but are available at no extra charge upon request. Lightweight door panels with door opener loops and reduced insulating elements also contribute to the lightweight design. A particularly lightweight lithium ion battery is also available as an option. The effect: Less weight, more dynamic response, more driving pleasure. And a vehicle gross weight of only 3,021 lbs.
