IndyCar returns to WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca in 2019

The 2018 IndyCar season came to a close yesterday with Chip Ganassi Racing driver Scott Dixon adding to his legacy by securing his fifth career IndyCar championship, trailing only A.J. Foyt (seven championships). Dixon finished second in the race to Ryan Hunter-Reay and the Andretti Autosport team, who were crowned winners of the season finale at Sonoma Raceway.

The exciting and well-received event featured the highest form of American open-wheel racing entertaining the crowd at Sonoma Raceway's road course. Next year's season finale will be held approximately 150 miles south at Monterey County's WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca on September 20-22, 2019.

'Sonoma Raceway had done a wonderful job of hosting their IndyCar event,' said Tim McGrane, CEO of WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. 'We attended the season finale, and Sonoma Raceway President and General Manager Steve Page and his staff could not have been more gracious. It is clear to me that our tracks are supportive of each other's efforts to bring the best possible motorsports options to the enthusiastic fans in California and those who come to visit.'

IndyCar's return to WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca breaks a 14-year absence from the series for the 11-turn, 2.238-mile road course. WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca had previously hosted IndyCar under CART and ChampCar sanction from 1983 to 2004. Special moments etched in IndyCar history having taken place at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca during that time include Bobby Rahal winning four straight races between 1984 and 1987, Mario Andretti's final race in 1994 and Alex Zanardi executing 'The Pass' to overtake Bryan Herta on the Corkscrew during the 1996 season finale.

'We look forward to celebrating these memories and creating new ones with IndyCar's return to WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca,' McGrane added. 'It is both an honor and a responsibility to host the final event of the season where a champion is crowned. We are eager to give IndyCar fans a great race in 2019.'

On-sale dates for the 2019 IndyCar Grand Prix of Monterey will be announced on www.WeatherTechRaceway.com at a future date.
