Big Cats Purr At Kempton Park

A magnificent 1962 Jaguar Mk II was the most popular car at Barons' Jaguar Heritage, Classic & Sports Cars sale at Kempton Park on September 15. Fresh from a no-expense-spared restoration, and offered in concours condition, the immaculate 3.8 manual example sold for £50,600.

Second past the post was a 1969 E-type Series 2 roadster that has been partially restored and now needs completion. It achieved £47,080 - nearly double the lower end of the guide price, proving that E-type restorations are pretty well irresistible to Jaguar fans.

Another lot that doubled its guide price was the 1964 Mk X Jaguar 'garage find'. It had been owned by the vendor's father from new and came complete with a remarkable amount of documentation. Now in need of a little extra TLC, it was acquired by its new owner for £10,890. And another Jaguar with great potential was the 1958 XK150SE FHC. An older restoration and offering scope for improvement, it sold for £39,600.

Barons has been watching XJ-S Jaguars start to move up the value chart, and the very nice 1989 convertible example proved popular at the sale - in spite of the need for a new headlining after it suffered the attention of a mouse last winter! It sold for £12,320.

The sale included other marques as well, with notable results including a rare 1935 Austin Strachan Taxi (£14,300) and a superb 1987 BMW E28 528i (£10,450).

Barons' Auction Manager Tim Gascoigne said: 'We're Jaguar enthusiasts at Barons so we always look forward to our Jaguar Heritage sale, and this one did not disappoint with 29 Jaguar and Daimlers on offer. The 1962 MKII 3.8 Manual was one of the nicest examples I have seen, and it very much deserved to make its £50,600 price. The 1958 XK 150 SE FHC, 1969 E-type Series 2 Roadster and 1983 Jaguar XJ12 HE (£4,400), were all absolute bargains in my eyes, but result of the day definitely has to be the £10,890 paid for the 1964 Jaguar MK X. It was certainly top money for the car, but it was worth every penny with a solid shell, one owner from new, and boxes of history.
