1988 Cadillac Brougham

The Cadillac Brougham was produced from 1987 through 1992 and had been previously sold from 1977 to 1986 as the Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham. The name 'Brougham' had originally represented a single horse-drawn enclosed carriage for 2 to 4 passengers and the name is attributed to British statesman, Henry Brougham. It was first used by Cadillac in 1916 to designate the enclosed 5-7 passenger sedan body style.

For 1988, the Cadillac brougham sedan had a base price of nearly $23,850 and came equipped with an overhead valve five-liter V8 engine offering 140 horsepower and 346 ft-lbs of torque. The engine was mated to a four-speed automatic transmission. New for 1988, the engine was given a new electronic spark control system and a higher axle ratio. Other modifications and improvements included three-point rear seat belts with integral shoulder belts, a new light switch lens with ISO-light symbol, five new exteriors, and three new interior colors.

In the front was a cross-hatch grille that was an identical re-cast of the 1981 grille. The optional 25-gallon fuel tank was now standard, and a new optional 'Premier Formal Vinyl Roof' was offered. Adding $1,095 to the base price, the vinyl roof greatly altered the overall appearance of the vehicle. It covered the entire roof, the B-pillar, and the rear quarter window surround.

Standard equipment included a tilt and telescope steering wheel, puncture-sealing tires, and a heavy-duty battery.
