1968 BMW 1600 GT

The Hans Glas GmbH at Dingolfing produced the Glas GT sports coupe. The first was the Glas 1300 GT which made its debut in September of 1963 at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Volume production began a little later, in March of 1964. The 1300GT was powered by a 1,290cc overhead camshaft engine with about 75 PS. By September of 1965, horsepower had risen to 85 PS. At this point in history, the cars could also be ordered with the 1,682cc engine that was also powering the Glas 1700 TS sedan.

BMW purchased Glas in 1967 and the 1600 GT soon followed, powered by a 1,573cc BMW engine found in the BMW 1600. BMW also fitted the car with a semi-trailing arm rear axle with coil springs in place of the prior rigid rear axle setup with leaf springs. It is estimated that around 1,300 examples of the 1600 GT were produced.
