Mercedes-Benz showcased the Mercedes-Benz 420 SEL at the IIA in Frankfurt in 1979. Designed by Bruno Sacco, the 420 SEL was a member of the new W126 generation 'S' class - or Sonderklasse (Special Class). They featured improved passenger safety, enhanced handling, superior aerodynamics, and a smoother ride. Fuel efficiency was improved by over 10-percent with the help of innovative and lightweight materials and alloys.

Auction entries : 1Powering the 1986 Mercedes-Benz 420 SEL was an overhead-cam eight-cylinder engine with light alloy block and heads. It displaced 256 cubic-inches and offered just over 200 horsepower and nearly 230 ft-lbs of torque. It had a multi-point fuel injection system, hydraulic valve lifters, a 9.0:1 compression ratio, and five main bearings. It was the same size as the 300SDL sedan, with a wheelbase of 121.1 inches and a length of 208.1 inches. In 1986, the 420SEL had a base price of just over $45,000.
