1956 Volkswagen Transporter

Production of the Volkswagen Transporter began in 1950, with the original T1 (Type 2) continuing until 1967. These split windshield vehicles are often referred to as the Microbus, Splitscreen, or Splittie.

The 1956 Volkswagen Transporter came as both the Kombi and Microbus. They differed with the Microbus had windows around its entire body. Power was from an air-cooled, 1,131cc engine DIN rated at about 24 horsepower. A higher compression ratio became standard in 1955 with SAE horsepower rated in the neighborhood of 36 hp. The engine was backed by a four-speed manual gearbox and hydraulic drum brakes were placed at all four corners.
