1909 Studebaker Model 13A

This 1909 Model 13a Studebaker Electric Suburban Stanhope is believed to be the only surviving example in the world. Studebaker Bros. Manufacturing, Co. built a significant line of electric cars and trucks from 1902-1912 during which they produced only 1,841 vehicles. The company, like many at the time, came as an outgrowth of their horse-drawn buggy business.

Technical features include four speeds forward and four speeds in reverse! A footbrake operates controls for the rear axle, and a second brake controls the armature shaft. The electric motor is powered by 36 cells of 9 plate batteries which are located both in the front and rear of the car to equalize weight distribution. The company said it had a top speed of 18 miles per hour. The car weighs 2300 pounds.

This car has a unique history, having been owned but two generations of a family now residing in Colorado. The owner, William Weikel, had the car in a restoration shop for about 20 years, but it was never finished. Recently he asked AACA for help, and the car was picked up and assembled as best as possible in less than two months for the 2021 Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance with a lot of help from various friends. The car is on loan to the AACA to be displayed for years to come.
