1960 Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight

Corporate literature of the era described the new Oldsmobile cars as being radiantly styled for the rocketing sixties, and highly regarded as being balanced and fresh with lean contours, a shapely grille, and elegant overall proportions. While most American vehicles wore flamboyant tailfins, the Oldsmobile rear fender deck area protruded outward instead of upward.

Since 1941, the 98 (from 1952 to 1991 it was spelled Ninety-Eighty) representing the top-of-the-line model within the Oldsmobile hierarchy. All-new post War styling arrived in 1948, met with enthusiastic reception as over 65,000 examples was sold. A new V8 engine followed a year later, named the 'Rocket.' Another all-new styling update arrived in 1954 and would last through 1956. The 324 cubic-inch Rocket V8 engine, shared with the Super 88 series, was backed by either a three-speed synchromesh manual or four-speed Hydramatic transmission. Its generous 126-inch wheelbase and 214.3-inch length provided ample interior space for its occupants and their luggage. All-new styling arrived in 1957 and again in 1959.

While other GM vehicles used the X-frame chassis, the Oldsmobile vehicles continued to rest on a full perimeter frame. The 126.3-inch platform of the Ninety-Eight carried a four-door sedan, a two-door hardtop, a four-door hardtop, and a convertible body style. The two-door hardtop body style was known as the 'Holiday SceniCoupe' and the four-door version was known as the 'Holiday SportSedan.' The four-door sedan featured six side windows and a sloping roof, while the two-door hardtop incorporated a large rear window with thin pillars. The four-door hardtop had a unique, 'floating roof' design complemented by a large warp-around-rear window.

The 1960 Oldsmobile 98 utilized a Wide-Stance chassis with cooler-running Air-Scoop brakes on all four wheels. The interiors were luxurious yet sporty with numerous amenities and fine materials. The two-door holiday hardtop was priced at $4,080 and 7,635 examples were built. The four-door holiday hardtop was priced at $4,160 and 27,257 examples were built, making it the most popular body style. The convertible was the most expensive at $4,360, and 7,284 examples built. The sedan (known as the 'Celebrity Sedan' but only for the 1960 model year) was the least expensive at $3,890 and 17,188 units were built.
