Contemporary And Historic Race Cars Collaborate To Thrill Fans In Conclusion To Inaugural Trans Am Speedfest
MONTEREY, Calif., May 5, 2019 – The final day of action at Trans Am SpeedFest delivered the WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca crowd. The 100-mile TA2 Powered by AEM feature race and two races in each Sportscar Vintage Racing Association (SVRA) run groups made for a thrilling day of action in both the contemporary and historic racing series.
The contemporary Trans Ams were countered by a large turnout of Historic Trans Am cars from SVRA. Memories from the Trans Am Series' first golden age echoed through the Monterey hillsides as muscle cars and under-2.5-liter machines from the 1960s and early 1970s powered through the 11-turn, 2.238-mile road course. Troy Ermish crossed the finish line first in both races behind the wheel of his 1800cc 1971 Datsun 510.
The quickest entry on the property was the 2005 Audi R8 LMP wheeled expertly by Travis Engen. Engen screamed to mid-1.2-minute lap times as he scored overall wins in the class combination SVRA Run Groups 9 and 11.
The fan response to the return of the Trans Am Series presented by Pirelli along with many historic race cars that are familiar to premier events at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca was overwhelmingly positive. The most recent event that America's Road Racing Series had contested at America's Most Exciting Race Track took place 14 years ago. Coincidentally, the 2004 event took place on a Saturday one day before the last time Indy cars were at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, and they return for the new home of the NTT IndyCar Series finale at the Firestone Grand Prix of Monterey Sept. 20-22.
The activity continues at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. Ferrari Racing Days is set to 'paint the track red' next weekend on May 10-12 for a celebration of the Italian manufacturer unlike any other in the United States this year. Cycling enthusiasts are looking forward to the upcoming Twilight Cycling event on May 8 followed one week later by the Amgen Tour of California Men's Stage 4 Start presented by Lexus on May 15.

One day after a great Trans Am Series presented by Pirelli feature race that included the TA, GT, and SuperGT classes, the modern muscle cars in TA2 Powered by AEM took the spotlight and put forth a clinic in speed, strategy and overtakes. Salinas native Thomas Merrill worked his way all the way from the 26th position on the grid to score the provisional win with official results still pending time of release.
