1980 Pontiac Grand Prix

The Pontiac Grand Prix arrived in the early 1960s and would remain in production for over nearly five decades, ending in 2008. The 1980 Pontiac Grand Prix wore styling that had been introduced in 1997, its fourth major redesign since its introduction. Compared to the third generation of styling, produced from 1973 to 1977, the fourth generation rested on a smaller platform that was approximately 12 inches shorter and weighed around 600 pounds less. For the first time in its history, the Grand Prix did not come standard with a V8 engine. Instead, it employed a Buick-built 231 cubic-inch engine which helped Pontiac comply with the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) mandates set after 1973-74 energy crisis. The standard engine in the 'LJ' (luxury) was the 301 CID V8 with two-barrel carburetion and 135 horsepower. The standard transmission with the V6 was a floor-mounted three-speed manual and a three-speed Turbo Hydra-Matic automatic was optional. The Turbo Hydra-Matic was standard on the LJ and SJ (sporty) models.

The 231 CID (3.8 liter) V6 continued to be the standard engine for the 1980 model year. The Buick-built engine had overhead valves, a cast-iron block and head, 8.0:1 compression, four main bearings, hydraulic valve lifters, and produced 110 horsepower at 3,800 RPM and 190 lb-ft of torque at 1,600 RPM. The standard engine on the SJ was the new 301 CID (4.9 liter) Chevy E/C four-barrel V8. This 90-degree engine had overhead valves, hydraulic valve lifters, five main bearings, 8.1:1 compression, and developed 140 horsepower at 4,000 RPM and 240 lb-ft of torque at 1,800 RPM. The manual transmissions were no longer available; only the three-speed Turbo-Hydramatic.

Standard equipment included power steering, power brakes, recirculating ball steering, and a coil spring suspension in the front with coil springs, a rigid axle, upper torque arms, and lower trailing radius arms at the rear.

The two-door coupe had seating for six and a factory base price of $6,220. The Grand Prix LJ Coupe was priced at $6,600 and the Grand Prix SJ Coupe listed at $7,300. The most popular was the 'base' with 72,659 units built followed by 34,968 of the LJ Coupe and 7,087 of the SJ Coupe.

The 1980 Grand Prix was given a new all-bright grille with vertical bars on each side, segregated by a thin divider and flanked on either side by rectangular headlamps. The grille bumper inserts were also new, as were the taillamp housings, lenses and bezels. The LJ and SJ trim levels had tapered wheel opening moldings, and revised accent striping.

The interiors gained new cloth door trim panels and new cloth seats on the base models. The LJ had the same seating as the base model with a luxury trim option. The SJ and LJ had a drop handle while the 'base' models had a pull strap above dual bright/black moldings.

New options included halogen headlamps and electronic-tuning stereo radio with extended range speakers.
