1978 Toyota Hilux

The Toyota HiLux was versatile, popular, and sold in many parts of the world. Initially designed by Takayuki Otsuka, it was offered as pickup truck or cab chassis variants, along with a variety of body styles, and was produced from March of 1968 to the present. The 1978 model year was part of the 'second generation,' introduced in May of 1972 and representing its first major restyling since its introduction. Along with exterior styling updates, the interior became more comfortable and a 'long bed' option (measuring 7.4 feet) became available for the first time in North American markets (available worldwide since April of 1969). Another redesign occurred in 1975 and more standard equipment was fitted. While many markets used a 2.0-liter 18R and 1.6-liter 12R engines, the North American market was given a 2.2-liter 20R engine in 1975 and a five-speed manual transmission was optional. The single overhead camshaft unit offered 96 horsepower, slightly less than the output produced by the previous 2.0-liter SOHC inline-4 used in 1973 and 1974.

In North America, the Hilux name was phased out in favor of 'Truck.' This name change had begun in various brochures and advertising campaigns as early as 1973.

The 1978 Toyota Hilux (pickup) had a standard 101.6-inch wheelbase, an overall length of 168.3-inches, and a width of 62.2-inches. The larger platform option measured 110.0-inches at its wheelbase and an overall length of 184.3-inches.

A redesigned Hilux was introduced in August of 1978, and a four-wheel-drive variant followed a few months later, in January of 1979. The dimensions remained similar to their predecessor, but the front and rear tracks became wider. In the front was a live axle with leaf springs while the rear used a torsion bar design with double wishbones.
