In the 1960's, automakers were hungry for ways to tap into the personal luxury and specialty car segments. Chrysler, always among the first to enter a fresh market, selected their Dodge Division to enter the race with a slightly larger model to fit between the pony cars and the personal luxury cars like the Thunderbird.
When Dodge introduced the all-new Charger in 1966, they had no idea just how dynamic the car and the name would become. Based on the intermediate B-Body platform of the Coronet, the Charger was strongly influenced by the 'Race on Sunday, Sell on Monday' idea popularized by racing. It is also said that 'it was style-wise a complete departure from the Dodge's mainstream cars.' With a long sleek fastback rear window, rotating headlights and a space-age electroluminescent dashboard, it certainly was much more than a dressed-up Coronet. With the long side windows and sweeping roof line, the Dodge Boys were able to pull off a beautifully designed fastback that certainly stood apart from the crowd.
This particular example of a first generation Charger is made even more unique by its full white vinyl top. This was a rare option that was not offered in 1966, making a stand out car even more attractive for 1967. Powered by a 383 cubic-inch 4-barrel engine backed by a Torqueflite automatic transmission, this sleek Charger has plenty of 'go' to back up its 'show.'
