This 935 K3 is one of the thirteen original K3's built by Kremer featuring a 3.2-liter twin-turbo flat 6 that produced up to 800 HP, depending on the boost setting, and weighing 2,260 lbs. The Kremer Brothers, of Kremer Racing in Germany, would take over building and developing the 935 after Porsche stopped doing so in 1979. The K3 would prove to be the most successful Porsche 935 winning at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, 24 Hours of Daytona, 12 Hours of Sebring as well as the IMSA Championship. This car was the 3rd 935K3 Interscope would own and one used the least as the team was in the process of switching to the Lola T600 to run in the GTP class starting in 1982. The best result for this car was second at the 1981 IMSA Road Atlanta 150 driven by team lead driver Danny Ongais.
Ted Field's legendary Interscope Racing Team acquired this 935 K3 to replace another K3 that had been damaged at the Daytona Finale in 1980. It was given the iconic Interscope colors of black with red, orange, and pink stripes, and made its racing debut in April of 1981 at Road Atlanta. The team's lead driver, Danny Ongais, drove the 935 K3 to a 4th place finish. It later placed 4th at Laguna Seca, 5th at the Daytona Finale, and participated in the Suzuka 1000km in Japan.
During the 1982 season, the K3 was entered in the 12 Hours of Sebring and the 6 Hours of Riverside. Its best result that year was at Road Atlanta where Ongais placed 2nd Overall. The K3's final outing in period was in 1983 at the 24 Hours of Daytona, where it was used as a practice car.
After Interscope Racing disbanded, Ted Field gave several cars, including this K3, to Danny Ongais who stored it in the garage of his Southern California beach house for approximately 15 years before selling it to Kevin Jeannette. Mr. Jeannette's firm, Gunnar Racing, then recommissioned the highly original K3 and sold it to Jay Policastro of Pennsylvania.
Mr. Policastro won the HSR Thundersports Championship with 00027 and then commissioned Gunnar Racing to perform a complete bare-tub restoration in 2003. Racing the car occasionally, it remained with him until 2006 when it was sold to Ray Hartman of California, who entered it in a few sprint events before selling it to Dr. Peter Garrod of Kent, England, in 2008. Following preparation by Porsche specialist Ian Gorham, the K3 was campaigned by Dr. Garrod in the Le Mans Classic in 2008 and 2010.
The current caretaker acquired the K3 in 2014. It has since been prepared by Alex Job Racing and received a full engine rebuild by 901 Shop Inc. in Stuart, Florida. Since then, the car has campaigned with great success at Le Mans Classic, several editions of the Monterey Historic Automobile Races, and at the last two Rennsport Reunions. In 2021, the car was shown at the Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance where it was selected as First in Class from a special display honoring the Porsche 935.
