When the Porsche 924 was introduced in 1976, it was met with both positive and negative reviews. Its front-wheel drive and Audi derived 2-liter engine was often criticized by Porsche enthusiasts. However, Porsche introduced the Type 944 in 1982. It had a re-worked platform and an inline 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine, which was effectively half of the 928's 5.0-liter V8. In 1986, a turbocharger and intercooler were added and referred to as the Type 951. Power rose more than 50-percent over standard naturally aspirated cars thanks to the KKK unit which helped propel the 951 from zero-to-sixty mph in less than six seconds.
In the mid-1980s, Weissach developed 7 limited edition, prototype competition 951s which ended up in Al Holbert's Motorsport Centre in Warrington, PA. They had codes 734 (PV-0, non-series engine) and 735 (PV-0 non-series transmissions). They lacked air conditioners, lacquer and chrome preservation, and sunroofs and sound insulation.
This particular example arrived in Pennsylvania from Weissach in May of 1985 fitted with Sport shock absorbers, a factory-installed Matter steel roll cage, Limited Slip Differential, improved ECU and KLR chips, dual-sport pinstripe cloth velour seats, and 16-inch staggered Phone Dial wheels. The car currently rides on sports 16-inch staggered Fuchs but the original wheels still remain with the vehicle.
Holbert modified the car and made sure it complied with SCCA racing regulations. It was sent to Brumos Porsche of Jacksonville, FL. and then into the care of Joe Cagbill. Cagbill, along with John Osteen and Elliot Forbes Robinson tracked the 951 in The Playboy Escort Endurance Championship in the SSGT class. It earned silver in the 1987 Championship with another 951 driver - Freddie Baker - taking gold. This car would continue to participate in SCCA events before it was retired around 1989 and returned to Brumos.
The car was then sold to Joseph Blassic who later sold it to W. Ryland Mills before being purchased by Jon Gearheart in 2000. Mr. Gearheart had the car stripped down to the tub and gave the car an engine-out restoration sometime around 2000. After the work was completed, the car was used for weekend racing.
Currently, the car has 17,000 miles on the odometer. The engine is a 2,479cc dual overhead cam turbocharged 4-cylinder unit fitted with Bosch Motronic fuel injection helping to produce 270 horsepower. There are a five-speed manual transaxle and four-wheel disc brakes.By Daniel Vaughan | Oct 2018
