In 1957, Ford introduced its car/truck Ranchero which soon became a considerable sales success. Chevrolet responded in 1959 with its new El Camino. The name meant 'The Road' in Spanish. It had a car-like platform and styling with the combined functionality of a truck bed. It was originally based on the Impala and it survived for just two years. It re-appeared in 1964 based on the Chevelle line, and shared most of its underpinnings and powertrains with the Chevelle. In 1968, the SS version made its debut making the El Camino a muscle car/truck.
