1963 Dodge 330 Lightweight Superstock

In the early 1960s, drag racing changed significantly and in 1962, ACCUS placed a 7-liter limit (427 cubic inches) on racing cars going forward. The NHRA and NASCAR agreed, resulting in Chrysler's 413 Maximum Performance Wedge being bored to 426 inches for the new year. Aluminum was used for certain body components to reduce weight.

Lynn A. Townsend, an accountant, joined Chrysler as controller in 1957. He became Chrysler's president in 1961 and is credited with revamping its dealer network, improving its cars, and decreasing the overhead expenses. He also chose to go all-in on creating 'competitive visibility' for the company. One of these competitive endeavors was in sanctioned drag racing. One of the cars specifically for that purpose was the Max Wedge-powered Dodge 330 Lightweight. The engine displaced 426 cubic inches for the 1963 model year, thanks to a new 7-liter rule by FIA/ACCUS, featuring Chrysler's unique cross-ram intake with two 4-barrel carburetors. Other features (today, referred to as the Stage I version of the engine) include a 13.5:1 compression ratio, special heads, and heavy-duty internals. Only 34 factory lightweight 330-trim coupes were produced in 1963.

The Dodge 'Hot One' package won Mr. Stock Eliminator in both the NHRA Winternationals and Indy Nationals in 1963, along with many other titles.
