In 1974, this mildly modifier Lancer GSR 1600 won the grueling Safari Rally with Joginder Singh at the wheel. At the time, the FIA-sanctioned Safari Rally event was a 6000-kilometer, 5-day-long ordeal that was contested on some of the harshest terrains in the African continent had to offer. The Safari Rally was a supreme test of driver, car, and team, challenging the limits of each. More remarkable still, the 1974 event was the Lancer's maiden Safari Rally appearance.
