1974 Mitsubishi Lancer 1600 GSR Safari

In 1974, this mildly modifier Lancer GSR 1600 won the grueling Safari Rally with Joginder Singh at the wheel. At the time, the FIA-sanctioned Safari Rally event was a 6000-kilometer, 5-day-long ordeal that was contested on some of the harshest terrains in the African continent had to offer. The Safari Rally was a supreme test of driver, car, and team, challenging the limits of each. More remarkable still, the 1974 event was the Lancer's maiden Safari Rally appearance. The Lancer's rugged nature, engineering simplicity, reliable power, nimble handling, and lightweight helped this compact vehicle enjoy a convincing triumph over more powerful and exotic race machinery. The Lancer would enjoy a 1-2-3 finish in the 1976 edition of the Safari Rally, further solidifying the Lancer's place in history of global rally competition, and creating the foundation for the generations of successful rally-racing, Lancer-based vehicles that would follow.
