1976 Ford Mustang II

The Ford Mustang, introduced in 1964, was a phenomenal success and became part of American automotive folklore. Steve McQueen's Detective Frank Bullitt immortalized the 1968 Fastback variant, and by the end of the decade the model had grown too big and sales had begun to slip. Lee Iacocca responded in 1970 by ordering the development of an all-new smaller pony car and, in coincidental timing, the newcomer arrived with the oil crisis - 'the right car at the right time.' Over the next four years (1974 through 1978), over one million examples were built.

Due to the fuel crisis of the 1970s and amidst safety and emissions concerns, engine sizes and output became more modest. Focusing on fuel efficient meant there was no option for a V-8 engine in 1974. This changed for 1975 with a V8 offered though it produced a modest 140 horsepower.

Beginning in 1976, Ford began offering appearance packages such as the Cobra II which included aesthetic items such as a simulated hood scoop, spoilers in the front and rear, and cobra-themed graphics.

The final year for the Mustang II was in 1978. Trying to regain their glory years and re-connect with the Mustangs roots, Ford offered the Mustang II in a V-8 King Cobra performance package.

The second generation of the Ford Mustang met consumer's growing demand for a less extravagant and smaller sports car.
