2001 CHEVROLET SUBURBAN: THE LEGEND CONTINUES

The king of the full-size sport utility segment is riding high into 2001 carried by the momentum generated by the debut of the all-new Chevrolet Suburban last year. For 66 years, Suburban has been the industry's longest-running nameplate, car or truck, on the road. This year, a new Z71 model makes its debut with specific styling cues that emphasize the Suburban's sporty side. While an all-new Vortec 8100 V8 engine gives the Suburban added power to back up its position as America's premier SÚV.

'We plan to build on the momentum of the highly successful launch of the 2000 Suburban,' notes brand manager Steve Ramsey. 'With more families spending time on the road, they're turning to the brand they trust. They want it all: exceptional power, cargo space, passenger room, towing capacity and most of all, safety.' Ramsey concludes. 'The Suburban gives it all. It's more comfortable, capable and confident.'

NEW FOR 2001
In keeping with tradition, the 2001 Suburban comes in three models: base, the well-equipped LS and uplevel LT in two weight categories: 1500 (1/2-ton) and 2500 (3/4-ton). Each is available in rear-wheel and four-wheel drive. The new Z71 Package is available on 1500 LS 4x4 models and includes specific exterior appointments and huge 17-inch tires and wheels to give the Z71 a sporty stance.

2001 also sees improvements to the engine lineup. The optional Vortec 6000 V8 receives aluminum cylinder heads and a new camshaft design, boosting horsepower to 315 @ 5000 rpm and torque to 365 @ 4000 rpm. Available on 2500 models is the all-new Vortec 8100 V8 engine that produces an astounding 340 peak horsepower and 455 lb. ft. of torque.

MORE COMFORTABLE THAN BEFORE

BODY STRÚCTÚRE — 'The key to comfort, is structure,' said chief engineer Ken Sohocki. '1500 Series Suburban's frame is fully boxed for added structural stiffness to reduce vibration, squeaks and rattles. Hydroforming was used in strategic places to eliminate welds, add strength and improve dimensional control.'

Not only is the Suburban's impressive frame strong, the low step-in height and wide doors allow for easier access than the previous model. Customers have the choice between a liftgate or rear cargo doors depending on their needs, a GM segment exclusive.

INTERIOR COMFORT — Suburban is famous for its wide-open spaces. For 2001, the instrument panel and cup holders have been revised. And a new 'Tan' vinyl, cloth or leather interior trim color replaces Medium Oak.

SEATING COMFORT — Renown for its luxurious accommodations, the Suburban's seats provide improved seatback angles, longer seat travel and added safety belt length versus the previous design to better fit each customer's individual size. The full-function uplevel seat includes power adjustments, memory, power lumbar and heat settings.

CLIMATE CONTROL — The Suburban's spacious interior on LT models is cooled by a premier air conditioning system that maintains optimal continuous cabin temperature. Additionally, on LT models, electronic dual zone climate controls allow passengers to maintain two different temperature levels in the cabin.

COOL TÚNES — Another way to stay cool in the 2001 Suburban is to crank up its premium audio system to transform its spacious interior into a road-going entertainment center. 'And if the kids don't appreciate your taste in music, there are audio controls and headphone jacks in the back.' Ramsey §äid.

MORE CAPABLE THAN BEFORE

VORTEC POWER — With an improved lineup of Vortec engines, the base 5300 V8, improved available 6000 V8 and new available 8100 V8, Suburban customers get outstanding performance for a variety of demands and situations. Premium Smooth Ride Suspension — Features self-leveling rear shocks that use energy from normal suspension motion to adjust and maintain level vehicle trim heights and help improve handling. (Optional on K1500 Series)

Autoride 'Real Time Damping' Suspension — this fully automatic system utilizes information from wheel position sensors, steering and other sensors to continuously vary shock damping. In addition, electronic sensors control a compressor pump that keeps the rear of the vehicle level when towing.

SÚRPRISINGLY CAR-LIKE RIDE — The Suburban's independent front torsion bar suspension is something more commonly found on high-end sports sedans.

The 2001 Suburban offers advanced vehicle control applications on both two and four-wheel drive models. A traction-assist system available on two-wheel drive models reacts to low traction conditions faster than the driver. On four-wheel drive models, the Autotrac active transfer case automatically transfers torque to the front wheels on demand. With standard variable effort steering on 1500-Series four-wheel drives, parking lot maneuvers are no big deal for Suburban.

MORE CONFIDENT THAN BEFORE

SAFETY AND SECÚRITY — Chevrolet Suburban provides the safety and security that have kept more than half of its buyers loyal to the brand. There's standard four-wheel disc antilock brakes and front seat side-impact air bags, a feature not standard on any other non-GM full-size sport utility. For added security, Suburban offers a driver lockout prevention system with programmable automatic locking and unlocking doors.
