1979 Chevrolet Corvette C3

The third series Corvette was produced from 1968 through 1982. In 1978 (the Corvette's 25th anniversary), the Corvette was giving a major re-style and for 1979 little changed. GM produced 53,807 examples of the Corvette for 1979, the only body style being the sport Coupe. The base engine was a 90-degree overhead valve V8 offering nearly 200 horsepower. All Corvettes had the highback bucket seats which were introduced the prior year on the limited-edition Indy Pace car. The fastback rear window was the most dramatic and emphatic styling change carried over from 1978. The fixed-glass fastback offered better aerodynamics and increased the usable luggage space behind the seats, while greatly improving rearward visibility. A retractable shade was installed to cover the rear compartment to protect cargo and carpet against sun exposure. For easier access to the cargo area, a new seat design was developed that folded flat. The front and rear spoiler package used on the previous year's Pace Car was now available as an option on any Corvette.

Many optional features from the 1978 model became standard equipment, which enhanced drivability and comfort. Among these luxuries were a telescoping steering column, power windows, and air conditioning. Other standard items included an AM/FM radio, power four-wheel disc brakes, limited-slip differential, tinted glass, front stabilizer bar, concealed wipers/washers, day/night inside mirror, four-spoke sport steering wheel, electric clock, trip odometer, bumper guards, luggage security shade, heater/defroster, anti-theft alarm system, wide outside mirror, and P227/70R15 steel-belted radial blackwalls. Transmission options included a four-speed manual gearbox or automatic gearbox.

Chevrolet Corvette Roars Into Its 60th Year

While the postwar Baby Boom was in full swing, this was definitely....
