1999 Pontiac Firebird

The high-performance Trans Am, based on GM's fourth-generation Camaro/Firebird, was revised for 1998 and built through 2002. 1999 marked three decades of uninterrupted production of the Pontiac Firebird since its launch in 1969. The 30th Anniversary Special Edition Trans Am of 1999 signaled a return to normally aspirated V-8 power with its 320 horsepower, all-aluminum, 346 cubic-inch LS1 engine with Ram Air induction. Special Arctic White paint with blue stripes recalled the original Trans Am livery of 1969. Leather upholstery, a number identification plate, bold accents, and several other touches highlighted the 30th-anniversary model's special offering. In total, 1,600 examples were built including 1,065 coupes.

Apart from the special edition, the Firebird lineup was similar to the prior model year's offerings. The powertrain and mechanical components were similar with the exception of the Formula and Trans Am trim levels which came standard with the previously optional four-speed automatic transmission. The six-speed manual was optional, as well as a Hurst shifter for the six-speed manual-equipped Firebirds. Other new options included traction control on V-6 powered Firebirds; a Torsen II slip reduction rear axle was now standard. The braking system was upgraded with a solenoid-based Bosch anti-locking system; electronic brake-force distribution replaced the prior hydraulic proportioning valve setup.

Trim levels included the base, Formula, and Trans Am. The base price was $18,250 for the base coupe which the Trans Am sold for $26,400 for the coupe and nearly $30,500 for the convertible.

The base engine was an overhead valve V-6 engine displacing 231 cubic inches and offering 200 horsepower. The Formula and Trans Am came with a V8 5.7-liter engine that developed 305 horsepower.

The Pontiac Firebird

Until 1969, a two-door hardtop and a convertible were only available. 1967 This marks the year Pontiac creates the Firebird, to be in competition with the Camaro. Five different Firebirds were available, with over 82,000 produced. Four speed....

Pontiac was tired of viewing from the sidelines, while Ford introduced the Mustang, and Chevy brought out the Camaro, so in midst of 1967 Pontiac finally jumped in the ring with the all new Firebird. Available with either six or eight cylinder engines, the Firebird was based heavily on the Camaro chassis, though Pontiac did attempt to make it their own. The Camaro featured a styled split front grille,....
