Ferrari began using the Mondial name on two-liter racing vehicles produced between 1954 and 1956. 39 of these cars were prepared with the Scuderia's Formula 2 engine. Ferrari introduced the 308 family of sports cars in 1975 with the Dino 308GT/4. The Dino 308 was transformed into the new Mondial in 1980, and was still the least expensive Ferrari at the time. Even as an entry-level Ferrari, it was far superior to most every other car on the road at the time. It had a low stance, wide tires, and excellent acceleration. The 1982 Ferrari Mondial 8 was available as a coupe - a cabriolet version followed in 1983. Pricing began at $63,940 for the coupe and power was supplied by a dual-overhead-cam eight-cylinder engine with a light alloy block and heads. It had a displacement size of 178.6 CID, had Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection, and offered just over 200 (SAE) horsepower. A new 32-valve Quattrovalvole engine served as a replacement for the 16-valve V8 and increased horsepower to 230.
