1967 Porsche 911S

Production of the new six-cylinder 911 commenced in September of 1964, and it wasn't long before the company's engineers, led by Helmuth Bott and Paul Hensler, began the development of the high-performance 911 S or 'Super.' Launched for 1967, the 911 S received upgrades to the flat-six engine, including a compression-ratio boost, new high-performance camshafts, bigger valves, forged and strengthened internal parts, revised exhaust ductwork, and Weber carburetors, plus careful and comprehensive suspension, brake, and interior revisions. The list included more powerful ventilated disc brakes, sportier chassis, Koni shock absorbers, and a front anti-roll bar. Later in the model production, they also received alloy front brake calipers.

The 911 S had a 140-mph top speed and shorter throttle response, especially past 4,000 RPMs. Zero-to-sixty mph was accomplished in around 6.5 seconds. The 911 S offered driver-and-machine interaction matched by few - if any - other sporting cars of the era.

With the mechanical improvements in place, the 911S offered 160 horsepower (an increase of 30% over the regular 911), 132 lb-ft of torque, and had 7,300 RPM. It had evenly spaced gears with the exception being a notably tall fifth, which permitted 100 mph @ 4,300 RPM. The 911 S models were distinguished by their Fuchs five-spoke alloy wheels.

When the 911 was introduced, it rested on an 87-inch wheelbase platform that lasted through 1968, with a slight extension employed from 1969. For 1967, Porsche produced 2,306 examples of the 911 S in total, with 483 being Targas and 1,823 Coupes. Demand greatly surpassed supply.

Porsche offered an optional 'Rally Package' which upgraded the stock 901/02 engine with 906 cams and connecting rods, plus larger carburetors. These lightweight cars, called the 911 R, were intended for racing or rallying while adhering to FIA's GT Group 3 regulations. Other improvements included a competition clutch and sport exhaust, a partial roll bar in the cabin, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, competition seats, wider alloy wheels, various gearing depending on the need, a locking differential, and a 100-liter fuel tank. Two optional tuning packages were made available, Sport Kit I and Sport Kit II. The Sport Kit II added different jets and venturis for the Weber 40 mm triple-throat carburetors, raising horsepower by another 15 bhp.

Among the 911 S model's many accolades were carrying Works driver Vic Elford to become European Rally Champion in 1967. Early 911s were also winners at the Monte Carlo Rally, Marathon de la Route, and countless other venues, and variants would go on to dominate GT grids around the world.
