1972 Jaguar XKE E-Type

By the early 1970s, Jaguar's E-Type had been in production for a decade. It was given continual improvements yet new emissions legislation in the American market threatened to cripple the car's performance. Jaguar's response was a 5343ccV12 engine from the stillborn XJ23 LeMans project car. The Series III V12 would be the final version and it weighed only 80 pounds more than the cast-iron block 4.2-liter XK Six. The new all-alloy, 5.3-liter, overhead-camshaft V12 offered 272 horsepower which was good enough for a top speed in excess of 140 mph. 0-100mph was accomplished in a time of around 16 seconds, making it the fastest-accelerating E-Type ever.

Along with a new engine, the Series 3 received a more aggressive-looking exterior with ventilated front disc brakes, Lucas transistorized ignition, anti-dive front suspension, and Adwest power-assisted steering. There was a four-pipe exhaust system, flared wheel arches, 'V12' boot badge, and a deeper radiator air intake.

Bodystyles included a two-seat roadster and 2+2 coupe. Both were built on the long-wheelbase floor pan introduced on the Series 2 '2+2.'

The Series III V12 E-Type was introduced to the U.S. market in March of 1971. There were very few changes for 1972. One of the more noticeable changes was the price, which rose by $400, now listed at $7,340 for the convertible.
