1974 Porsche 911

The 'G-Series' 911 models were built from August 1973 through July 1974. They incorporated some major structural, mechanical, and cosmetic changes to bring their 911 models inline with stringent U.S. safety and emissions regulations. Perhaps the most visible change was the impact-absorbing aluminum bumpers in both the front and the back. To help absorb the impact, the inner structures at both ends were reinforced. The hood was shortened, and the doors were reinforced internally. The front corner lights and reflectors were incorporated into the rubber bumper trim. Between the taillight assemblies sat a new center reflector. Suspension upgrades, a larger fuel tank, and a single battery installed into the left-front corner of the trunk were additional changes. Inside, there were new high-backed seats.

The 2.7-liter Carrera replaced the 911S as the top model. The 911S, which also used a 2.7-liter engine, was positioned in place of the 911E. The Carrera was available in two different forms, with either the 210 horsepower 'MFI' (mechanical fuel injected) 911/83 engine of the prior year's Carrera 2.7 RS for 'RoW' (Rest of World) markets and 175 horsepower with Bosch electronic fuel injection for the U.S. Porsche made the U.S.-spec 2.7 palatable by increasing compression to 8.5:1, enlarging the intake ports, and installing new intake cams with greater lift and longer durant.

All 911 Carrera's were available with the 'Burzel' or 'ducktail' rear spoiler of its predecessor, the 'whale tail' from 1975, or no spoiler for a classic appearance. Porsche produced the 2.7-liter 911 Carrera from August 1973 through July 1975 with 2,243 examples including 1,036 coupes and 433 Targas for Porsche's 'RoW' or Rest of the World markets, plus 528 coupes and 246 Targas earmarked for the U.S.
