General Motors unveiled the Sonic at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show, along with the Z Spec version. The Sonic will be available in both sedan and hatchback body styles with either a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine mated to a five-speed manual or six-speed automatic. There is an optional 1.4-liter turbocharged unit offering 138 horsepower that comes with either an automatic or manual with six forward gears.
At the 2010 SEMA Show, Chevrolet introduced the Z-Spec name, where they revealed the Volt Z-Spec, the Spark Z-Spec, and the Cruze Z-Spec.
The Sonic Z-Spec has a large rear-deck spoiler, an orange paint scheme, and eighteen-inch multi-spoke BBS wheels. The interior has the same orange color scheme, as well as new Recaro seats covered in tan leather. There is also a billet shift knob and a flat-bottom steering wheel cap.
