1971 Triumph Stag

Triumph introduced its first-ever V8-powered car - the Stag - in 1971. A grand touring car in thought, the stag came in a convertible version with a detachable hardtop. The design was courtesy of designer Giovanni Michelotti who envisioned a sporty version of the 200 Saloon. He enlisted the help of chief engineer Harry Webster to help with the mechanical aspects of the vehicle.

The Stag enjoyed moderate success in the United Kingdom, but in the United States, sales fell short of estimated figures. Thus, the Stag was only imported from 1971 till 1973, making the left-hand drive Stag a very rare car. Production lasted from 1970 through 1977, with 25,939 examples built.

The Stag was powered by an overhead-valve V8 engine that displaced 182.9 cubic inches and produced 145 horsepower. To comply with emission standards in the United States, the engine dropped the troublesome mechanical fuel injection system in favor of dual Zenith-Stromberg 175 CDSE carburetors. It had a four-speed manual gearbox and disc brakes in the front, with drums at the rear.
