1977 Chevrolet Caprice Classic

The Caprice has a history that began in 1965 as the top-of-the-line full-size Chevrolet. It grew in popularity during the 1970s where it rivaled the sales of its full-size (yet lesser trimmed) Impala sibling. The Caprice was GM's B-body sales leader.

The 1977 Chevrolet was modern, new, but with an appearance that had similarities to the 1976 model. The 1971-76 Caprice had rounded lines and was a rather big car. The 1977 had squared-off lines and a boxy appearance. Its appearance would remain with only minor changes for 14 years before it would receive a major change for 1991.

For 1977, Chevrolet produced 212,840 examples of the Caprice Classic Sedan. The Caprice Classic was also available as a coupe, Landau Coupe, and Estate wagon which (combined) saw a further 128,542 examples built. The base engine was a six-cylinder overhead-valve unit that displaced 250 CID and offered 110 horsepower. An optional 5-liter V8 was available which offered 145 horsepower.

In comparison to the prior year's model, the Caprice Classic lost around 700 lbs and was given a front grille with a fine mesh pattern. They had wraparound marker lamps and small parking lamps inset in the bumper.

The Caprice Classic had a stand-up hood ornament. Standard equipment included a Turbo Hydra-Matic transmission, power steering, power brakes, a heater, a defroster, carpeting, a cigarette lighter, and hide-away windshield wipers.
