Inspired and envious of the success that Ford was having with their Ranchero of 1957, Chevrolet responded with their all-new El Camino model in 1959. It was originally base on the Impala and survived for just two years. It would re-appear in 1964 based on the Chevelle. The Chevrolet El Camino, advertised as a dual purpose vehicle, was both a pickup and a passenger car. The 1966 El Camino, with styling of the Chevelle, fell under the second generation of the El Camino production. The second generation Chevelle was produced through 1967.Period advertising claimed that the El Camino was endowed with a streak of versatility that enables it to step gracefully into dozens of roles. Buyers had their choice of 24 different engine and transmission combinations. Custom trim levels and the high-performance 'Super Sport' (SS) packages were also available. The SS featured a blacked-out grille and a 'power bulge' type hood.
