Gilles Vidal, PEUGEOT's Design Director, has won the prestigious 'Design Hero 2019' prize at the 2019 Autocar Awards, held at the Silverstone Wing on Tuesday 14th May.

The Autocar Awards celebrate the best individuals and vehicles in the industry, with Vidal recognised for his work in reviving PEUGEOT's design style.

Explaining the judges' choice, Mark Tisshaw, Editor of Autocar, said: 'Vidal has reinvigorated his company's fortunes in many major markets with a series of standout designs that many critics believe have jumped two generations.

'The range is now one of the industry's best-looking, and its designs keep getting better: in the past year our winner's 508 Fastback has been given a strong, much-needed renaissance, and his soon-to-launch 208 looks like one of the best proportioned superminis of recent times.'

Gilles Vidal has also worked on the award-winning PEUGEOT SUV range, designing the 3008 and 5008 SUVs – the latter an ambitious project as the model transitioned from an MPV to an SUV.

Vidal also led the design of the E-Legend concept car, unveiled at the 2018 Paris Motor Show. The fully electric concept car not only showcases PEUGEOT's future design direction, but also the brand's electric ambitions, as PEUGEOT recently committed to providing electrified versions of every model across its line-up by 2023.

David Peel, Managing Director of PEUGEOT UK said: 'We are all very proud of the work of Gilles and his team. Our three product pillars are: instinctive driving experience, uncompromising quality and sharp design, which our team of Designers and Engineers work incredibly hard to achieve, so Gilles' recognition at the Autocar Awards is just reward for the work he has done. The desirability he has injected is evidenced not only by critical acclaim and award wins, such as this, but also by the strong residual values our models enjoy across the board.'
