•Title blow for Coates as Young & Lidsey win at dramatic Silverstone

•Results mean it's 3 for the title in Brands Hatch decider

•Young holds 15 point advantage after Coates suffers blow

•Bond still in contention heading into home event

Brett Lidsey – with his maiden victory – and Jack Young took the wins in the Renault UK Clio Cup's highly charged penultimate rounds of 2019 at Silverstone. With only Brands Hatch's title-deciding rounds to go, Young has moved into the championship lead after chief rival Max Coates' hopes suffered a blow…

Lidsey (Northfleet) led every lap from pole position to achieve a stylish first win in Silverstone's opening race, held on Saturday.

Coates (Scorton) managed to fight his way through to finish in second ahead of Team HARD team-mate Jamie Bond (West Malling) in third. Young (Belfast) was fourth with two bonus points for setting a new lap record.

Sunday's race produced plenty of wow factor for those watching trackside and also ITV4's live coverage of the action.

Lidsey again started from pole, but Young was able to grab the lead and then draw clear as those behind starting fighting over second position.

Ultimately, Lidsey and Coates ended up spinning off the track following a dramatic three-car tangle that also involved Assetto Motorsport's Jade Edwards (Northampton). CLICK HERE to see the incident.

This left Young unchallenged as he took his sixth win of the season while Westbourne Motorsport's Ben Colburn (Worthing) and Team HARD's Ethan Hammerton (Northallerton) came through to finish in second and third. Colburn's second place was his best result to date and he also set the fastest lap.

Coates was at least able to rejoin the race to salvage an 11th place finish but the upshot is that he has lost his championship lead to Young and is now 15 points behind the Northern Irish teenager with only Brands Hatch's title-deciding final two rounds to go in a fortnight (12-13 October).

Thanks to finishing fifth in Silverstone's second race, Bond still has an outside chance of the title at his home circuit of Brands Hatch: he will go there 46 points adrift of leader Young with a maximum of 56 available from the two races.

Championship points heading to Brands Hatch's final two rounds:

1. Jack Young

2. Max Coates

3. Jamie Bond

4. Brett Lidsey

Elsewhere at Silverstone, several other names impressed…

The returning Anton Spires (Buckingham) and Nathan Edwards (Tunbridge Wells) were at the sharp end all weekend for the Westbourne and MRM squads.

In race two, Spires took a career-best fourth and there was also a highest-ever result of sixth for fellow Westbourne driver Finlay Robinson (Harrogate). Newcomers Paul Taylor (Great Amwell) and Nick Halstead (Basingstoke) showed strongly on their debuts with Team HARD and Westbourne. Edwards' family run team Assetto will be pleased with its pace on its first outing in the championship.

Team HARD holds a commanding lead in the Entrants Trophy but can still be beaten to the title by MRM.
