The UK Car of the Year Awards represents a unique challenge for the automotive industry each year. Twenty-nine highly experienced judges who write for titles such as Top Gear Magazine, The Sunday Times, The Daily Express, The Telegraph, CAR, Auto Express, BusinessCar, The Independent, Evo and many more determine the winning cars.

Time spent at the wheel of the new Hyundai IONIQ 5 left the judges in no doubt about its multitude of talents. 'The Hyundai IONIQ 5 blazes an EV trail. Since its introduction in 2021, Hyundai's rally-inspired i20N has always punched well above its 1,190kg weight. However, to win the coveted UK Car of the Year Best Performance Car title, the i20N had to compete against a line-up of established sports cars with performance far beyond its usual hot hatch competitors.

'The Hyundai i20N is quite the performer at an affordable price,' observed the judges, acknowledging the car's £25,220 price tag and the breath-taking 6.2-second 0-62mph acceleration time afforded by the efficient 204PS 1.6 T-GDi petrol engine.

One of the judges, Top Gear Head of Car Testing, Ollie Marriage, described the Hyundai i20N as 'A wicked little hot hatch.' Marriage has considerable experience of the Hyundai i20N and led Top Gear's judging panel when it named the Hyundai i20N 'Top Gear Speed Week Champion' and 'Top Gear Car of the Year' in 2021.
