Formula 1 And Le Mans Race Cars To Highlight RM Sotheby's Monaco Auction During The Monaco Grand Prix HistoriqueThe Nigel Mansell Collection, an iconic Alfa Romeo Tipo 33/3, and Mercedes 300 SL Gullwing grace the sixth biennial RM Sotheby's Monaco auction

• RM Sotheby's offers significant Formula 1 machines direct from ownership of ex-F1 World Champion, Nigel Mansell, in Monaco during the Grand Prix de Monaco Historique weekend

• Historic Alfa Romeo Tipo 33/3 to be offered, recognized as an entrant of the 1970 24 Hours of Le Mans and featured in the cult 1971 film Le Mans

• Additional highlights include a 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing, 2005 Reynard 2KI GP Masters Car, and 1967 Maserati Ghibli 4.7 Coupé by Ghia

Taking place alongside the legendary Grand Prix de Monaco Historique, which uses the same legendary circuit as the Formula 1 Grand Prix and shows some of the world's most incredible race cars, RM Sotheby's returns to the glamorous Grimaldi Forum on 14 May 2022. A venue synonymous with the principality's most prestigious events, our sixth biennial Monaco auction will be part of a weekend ripe with automotive excitement.

In keeping with the racing traditions of Monaco, several thoroughbred race cars will go under the hammer at the sale. Built and raced by Autodelta, a stunning 1969 Alfa Romeo Tipo 33/3 Sports Racer will be offered for sale. Recognized by Nanni Galli as the car he used in the 1970 edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans—where it ran a comfortable 2nd for much of the race—the car had to retire from that event but forged its reputation as a legendary competitor. The race-going Alfa was featured in the cult film Le Mans before being sold to its first private owner in 1973. With just four private owners from new and subjected to a comprehensive 'rolling rebuild' in 2020, this Tipo will be sure to please its new owners, whether intended for show or to take back onto the track. With maintenance invoices exceeding £700,000 in current ownership, this 440-horsepower car is expected to sell for €1,700,000 to €2,100,000.

Direct from Nigel Mansell himself, RM Sotheby's is extremely proud to offer two iconic race cars at Monaco from one of motorsport's most exciting eras. The Collection contains what are unquestionably two of the most significant Formula 1 cars to ever be offered at auction, including the 1989 Ferrari 640, chassis no. 109, in which Mansell won two races that year, including in his debut race for Scuderia Ferrari. Remarkably, the British driver was the last F1 team recruit personally selected by Enzo Ferrari, and his two years with the Italian race outfit were well documented. In addition, the incredible 1991 Williams FW14, chassis no. 5, will line up alongside its F1 stablemate in Monaco. This is the famous car in which Mansell won no fewer than five Grand Prix and is noteworthy as the car that became known the world over as the British Grand Prix-winning 'Senna Taxi' car—a situation born out of the Brazilian running out of fuel and finding himself stranded on the victory lap around the Silverstone circuit after finishing 4th at the 1991 race.

Joining the race-bred classics is a stunning 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing with the unmistakable flowing silhouette that marks the signature doors of the sports car icon. The 300 SL revolutionized both contemporary car design and the sheer performance of sports cars made in the 1950s. Having been thought to have spent at least 15 years previously in Saudi Arabia, this 300 SL Gullwing is finally coming home to Europe. As one of 335 examples finished in Silver Grey Metallic for 1955, this desert jewel is expected to sell for €800,000 to €1,1,000.

Other notable lots include a 1973 Ferrari Dino 246 GTS 'Chairs & Flares' by Scaglietti finished in a unique shade of Rosso Cordoba Metallizzato, a 1989 Isdera Spyder 036i that was displayed by the small-volume manufacturer at the 1989 Geneva Motor Show, a Maserati Classiche-certified 1967 Maserati Ghibli 4.7 Coupé by Ghia equipped with its matching-numbers chassis and engine, and many more to be revealed in the coming weeks.
