Mike Bunce, MAHLE Powertrain's Head of Research and Head of Design & Analysis, has received the SAE Foundation's Young Industry Leadership Award. Presented at the SAE Foundation's Annual Celebration in Detroit, the award recognizes individuals with significant accomplishments who demonstrate leadership in their field and the promotion of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education.

Dr. Bunce is acknowledged globally for his research on increasing engine efficiency and facilitating robust use of low carbon fuels. His work on the company's pre-chamber combustion technology has achieved world-wide recognition as a high-efficiency, low-emissions, future fuels-enabler for engines. He has led over 50 development programs with industry partners on the topic, and oversees a technology portfolio that includes advanced combustion and low carbon fuels, fuel cell systems, emissions control, hybrids, and batteries.

In 2022 he completed his PhD through the University of Nottingham, and as a strong proponent of preparing the next generation of engineers to succeed in a rapidly changing industry, he has supported undergraduate engineering fairs and mentorship programs.

The SAE Foundation is the charitable arm of SAE International® – the Society for Automotive Engineers – which advances mobility knowledge and solutions for the benefit of humanity.

Now in their 12th year, the award winners are selected by a committee of industry professionals who review nominations in a number of categories.
