FDA: FUOCO DOES THE DOUBLE AT IMOLA

Company press release.

FDA: FUOCO DOES THE DOUBLE AT IMOLAImola, 12 May –16 year old Antonio Fuoco wanted to have his say on what has been a very special Sunday for Scuderia Ferrari. On the same weekend that Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa made it to the Barcelona podium, Fuoco did an amazing double, winning both races in the Formula Renault Alps series at the Imola circuit.

Fuoco, at only his second ever event in the category, collected the maximum points available. In qualifying, he took a peremptory pole position, setting a time no less than nine tenths quicker than the second placed driver in his group. It was a sign of things to come, given that, in Race 1, Antonio immediately took the lead, pulling out three seconds over the field.

With a few laps to go, light rain began to fall and Fuoco spun, dropping down to fourth. A few moments later, the race was red flagged by the race director because track conditions were too dangerous. As stated in the rules, the stewards deemed the final result should be taken at the end of the previous lap and Antonio thus stood on the top step of the podium.

In the second race of the Imola weekend, the script did not change. Fuoco tore off from pole position and kept the lead to the chequered flag, thus taking a second win of the weekend, as well as the third win out of the four races run so far in Formula Renault 2.0.

At the end of the second round of the season, Fuoco has consolidated his lead in the championship classification and is now on 93 points, 36 more than Pierre Gasly in second place.

Antonio Fuoco

'I am very pleased with the overall outcome of this weekend. In qualifying I was sure I'd be able to be in the running in the two races on the programme and that's how it turned out. In the final stages of the first race, I had a difficult moment. It unexpectedly started to rain and, on the slick tyres, it was very difficult to drive the car. I ended up spinning at the Rivazza corner, but a few seconds later the race was stopped, taking the classification from the previous lap. It went well, I was particularly keen to have a great second race and I think the win I took without any problems confirmed the potential that both myself and the Prema team had this weekend. I now have a very good feeling with this car which makes me optimistic for the future. But I will just keep my feet on the ground as I continue to work with the Prema team and all the Ferrari Driver Academy personnel, as we prepare for the next challenges.'
