Talk on racing legend Nuvolari set for Nov. 2 at IMRRC

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (Oct. 18, 2013) - Legendary Italian racer Tazio Nuvolari will be the subject of a Center Conversations talk on Saturday, Nov. 2, at the International Motor Racing Research Center in Watkins Glen, N.Y.

Long fascinated with Nuvolari, Joe Tierno of Honeoye Falls, N.Y., will highlight his free talk, 'Tazio Nuvolari: His Life and Times,' with photographs and film to illustrate Nuvolari's career and the world in which he became a champion.

The talk begins at 1 p.m.

A great natural talent, Nuvolari is regarded by racing experts and historians to be one of history's greatest drivers.

'Nuvolari was an enormous personality and the most loved and admired race driver of his era,' said award-winning motorsports author Michael Argetsinger, who is a member of the Racing Research Center's Governing Council.

Nuvolari served as a driver in the Italian army before beginning his career racing motorcycles in 1920. Four years later, and again in 1928, he won the Italian motorcycle championship. His first major victory in a car came in the 1930 Mille Miglia, Italy's most famous automobile road race. Over the course of his 30 years of racing, he drove for Alfa Romeo, Scuderia Ferrari, Maserati, German Auto Union and as an independent driver in cars constructed by Bugatti, Maserati and MG.

He had nearly 50 major career wins, including earning the European Grand Prix championship in 1932. Nuvolari posted victories in every Grand Prix race except the Czechoslovakian Grand Prix.

'This legendary Italian driver lived a fascinating life and was a key player in the saga of motorsports during the 1930s, the Golden Age of racing,' Tierno said.

Tierno's lifetime fascination with Nuvolari was heightened when he visited Nuvolari's home on a trip to Italy in 1996. Tierno was so inspired by the experience that he has devoted himself to researching the details of Nuvolari's life and racing career

Tierno saw his first car race in 1952 at Watkins Glen. Catching the racing bug, his racing resume includes piloting MGs, go-karts and Formula Vees. He joined the SCCA in 1955, sponsored by Spankey Smith, Bob Bucher and Bill Fleming. At the time, he was the youngest SCCA member in the nation.

In 1958, still in high school, he was a co-founder of the Binghamton (N.Y.) Automobile Racing Club, BARC.

The popular Center Conversations program has long been a cornerstone of the Racing Research Center's educational outreach and oral history initiative. Noted authors, race historians, drivers, team owners and track officials have taken listeners behind the scenes of every race series over the years.

Speakers have included Donald Davidson, historian at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway; Doug Nye, writer and historian; David Donohue, racer and son of famed driver Mark Donohue; Bobby Rahal, driver and team owner; and the late John Fitch and Bill Milliken, both legendary figures in road racing.

The Racing Research Center is an archival library dedicated to the preservation of the history of motorsports, of all series and all venues, through its collections of books, periodicals, films, photographs, fine art and other materials.
