This 1913 Pathfinder Model 40 Touring was offered for sale at the 2007 RM Auctions in Amelia Island, Florida where it was estimated to sell for $110,000-$150,000. It is powered by a 281 cubic-inch four-cylinder engine that is capable of producing 40 horsepower. There is a three-speed manual gearbox and mechanical rear brakes. It is the only known example in existence.
This vehicle was originally purchased by Clark and Laura Rice in 1913. They opted for the top-of-the-line package which included many additional options such as full electric equipment including five lamps, a dynamo, a storage battery, an ammeter, and an electric self-starter. The top is constructed of silk mohair. There are storm curtains, Bair auto top holer, rain vision and ventilating windshield, robe rails, footrests, horn, and a complete set of tools including a pump, jack, and tire repair kit. The total package cost $2,185 which was a sizable fortune in 1913.
It is finished in dark blue paint and has many nickel-plated materials. There is brown trim and painted white wooden wheels.
The Rice's passed the car on to their son, Earl B. Rice. It remained in their family for over 90 years. In 1980, it was treated to a complete restoration which lasted three years.
At auction, the car did find a new owner, thou it sold for less than the estimated value. The car was sold for $87,000.By Daniel Vaughan | Mar 2007
