The Ferrari Daytona was produced from 1968 to 1973. The Daytona's engine is known as the Tipo 251, which is a 4.4 liter (4390cc) DOHC V12 with a 60-degree-bank angle. The Tipo is the result of the earlier Colombo V12 used in the 275 GTB/4.
The Tipo 251 motor features six, twin carburetors from Weber and a compression ratio of 9.3:1 producing 352 horsepower reaching 174 mph and can accelerate from 0-60 mph in 5.4 seconds.
Unlike traditional Pininfarina Ferrari designs with rounded body panels, the Daytona features styling with sharper edges. A designer by the name of Leonardo Fioravanti confirmed a rumor that it took him seven days to design the Daytona. The early Daytona featured fixed headlights behind an acrylic glass cover. That characteristic was abandoned in 1971 in favor of retractable, pop-up, twin headlights due to new safety regulations in the United States.
When Ferrari introduced the 365 GTB/4 Daytona at the 1968 Paris Motor Show, enthusiasts were immediately struck by the dramatic styling courtesy of Pininfarina's Leonardo Fioravanti. One of the most notable features of his design was a full-width Plexiglas cover that ran from headlamp to headlamp. Attractive as it was, this configuration was not allowed in the U.S. for safety reasons. In order to conform the model for this primary market, Ferrari redesigned the fascia to exchange the Plexiglas cover with pop-up headlamps. Accounting for approximately 400 of the earliest Daytonas the plexinose examples have become particularly prized for their rarity and more faithful realization of the original design.
This original European delivery specification car was delivered to its first owner in Bologna, Italy. It was imported into the U.S. in the late 1970s.
The car is powered by a 4.4-liter V12 engine fitted with six Weber carburetors coupled to a 5-speed transaxle and equipped with 4-wheel assisted disc brakes and fully independent double wishbone suspension with coil springs.
