The MGB was launched in May of 1962 as a successor to the MGA. It had a modern new sports car design with smooth body lines and rigid monocoque construction. In keeping with the company's 'Safety Fast' mantra, the MGB was one of the world's first automobiles with built-in crumple zones designed to protect occupants in 30 mph collisions with stationary barriers.
Powering the MGB was a 1.8-liter BMC B-Series four-cylinder engine with overhead valves. Up front was an independent suspension and a rack-and-pinion steering unit. Disc brakes were in the front with drums in the rear.
In racing, the MGB proved to be very successful, with many victories in the American SCCA circles in the hands of drivers such as Ronnie Bucknum. Other high-profile entries at Sebring, LeMans, and other storied venues added to every MGB sold.
Over the production lifespan of the B, the cars were carefully updated while maintaining its sporting credentials even with the later emission controls that began stealing away its performance persona from 1968 on.
By the time production ended at the BMC/MG Abingdon works in 1980, around 515,000 examples were produced.
This particular MGB has the original-style bumpers, slat-type chrome grille, and a 1798cc four-cylinder engine. It was given a complete, high-quality restoration and was finished in British Racing Green livery, complemented by tan leather upholstery, matching carpet, and a tan convertible top. It has the banjo-style steering wheel and hub-mounted octagon logo. It rides on chrome wire wheels and equipped with front fender-mounted racing mirrors.By Daniel Vaughan | Apr 2014
