A.L.F.A., as it was known at the time, proved it's racing intentions by entering two cars in the 1911 Targa Florio. After the First World War, sporting models were being produced and in 1920, the company had its first racing victory when Giuseppi Compari won at the Mugello circuit.
The company's first new post-war design was the 1900, which was introduced in 1950. It brought with it two major advances over the pre-war carry-over models, unitary construction and a compact twin overhead-cam four-cylinder engine. Sales were strong, with production reaching nearly 4,000. A coupe with a body by Carrozzeria Touring of Milan was sold as the 'Sprint,' and Pinin Farina of Turin countered with a soft-top Spider.
In 1954, Alfa Romeo introduced its second new post-war design, the Giulietta. Initially offered as a Sprint coupe, designed by Franco Scaglione at Bertone, a sedan (Berlina) followed several months later in the spring of 1955. A convertible spider followed mid-year, designed and built by Pinin Farina.
Power was supplied by a 1290 cubic centimeter dual overhead-cam four-cylinder fitted with a light alloy block and a hemispherical cylinder head. In the Sprint and Spider, the engine offered 80 brake horsepower. A Veloce version was available, with twin Weber DCOE carburetors, and rated at 90 brake horsepower.
The current owner of this Spider acquired it in 2009, following a restoration by its previous owner. Since that time, it has been driven less than 1,000 miles. The car is finished in Alfa Romeo red with a black roof.By Daniel Vaughan | Sep 2015
