Introduced in 1972, the Ferrari 365 GT4 2+2 was powered by a 4.4-liter V12 engine fitted with 6 Weber carburetors and offered 340 horsepower. In 1976, the 365 was replaced by the 400 Series, powered by an enlarged 310 horsepower, 4.8-liter V12 engine that could be fitted with an optional Borg-Warner 3-speed automatic gearbox. In 1982, the interior was heavily revised and given electronic switchgear including buttons to open the hood, the trunk, and the fuel flaps electrically. In total, just 883 Automatic 400i examples were produced from 1979 to 1985, and it is believed that 180 were right-hand drive.
The 400i was built as a luxury grand tourer with classic Pininfarina's body lines. The 'i' suffix indicated the Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection system.
