Buick celebrated its golden anniversary in 1953, and with that it introduced a modern high-compression overhead valve V-8 engine in its Super and Roadmaster models. The 322 cubic-inch, 170 horsepower engine was given the nickname 'Nailhead' and a version continued to power Buicks through 1966. The 1953 Estate Wagon was the final year that wood was used on station wagon models. Framing was done in seasoned northern ash over mahogany panels, while the tailgate was constructed of birch and metal runners. Only 1,830 Super Estate Wagons were produced for the model year with bodies built by the Ionia Manufacturing Co., Ionia, Michigan.
The Estate Wagons were created for Harlow Curtis, President of General Motors, and inspired by Harley Earl's concept cars. Promising a 'scintillating life on wheels', a favored way to go for ease of country living or town travel was this magnificent motorcar. Already distinctive with its distinguishing grille, sweeping brightwork and signature VentiPorts, the limited edition Estate Wagon was billed as being equally at ease when going to the golf club in casual attire or fitting in at a white tie and tails affair. The magnificence and prestige of the hand crafted wood bodied cars of this era remain in place to this day.
This particular Terrace-Green Metallic wagon is equipped with the optional Dynaflow automatic transmission and is nicely maintained original example with just 28,000 miles. Only the paint and varnish has been redone, and all the wood remains as-built from new. It is powered by Buick's 322 cid, 170 hp Fireball Nailhead V-8 engine, the first V-8 in Buick's line-up. Features include a Dynaflow automatic transmission, heater, defroster, clock, directional signals, spotlight and a Buick Selectronic AM radio, all working as original. This Estate Wagon also has the expensive option of wire wheels with knock-off spinners and Firestone 8.20x15 bias ply whitewall tires adding to the striking beauty of this exceptional car.
