The Aston Martin DB7 GT Zagato Concept was conceived at the 2001 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance during a meeting between the Aston Martin CEO Dr. Ulrich Bez and Designer Andrea Zagato, who were seeking to rekindle the collaboration that had resulted in the highly successful DB4 GT and the later Vantage and Volante Zagato models. The first styling sketches were approved very quickly by the company, and production was started. A total of 99 cars were built starting in 2003, incorporating the now famous Zagato trademark 'double-bubble' roof. The engine is the V12 6.0-liter powerplant, tuned to give an additional 20 bhp over the standard DB7 unit.
Following orders from customers, Zagato began production of the DB7 Zagato in mid-2003. The car is based on a shortened version of the Vantage Volante platform and weighs in at just 1,740kg. The car reaches an estimated top speed of 190 MPH and can reach 60 MPH comfortably in less than five seconds.
Aston Martin shipped completed chassis to Milan for Zagato to hand fit the body panels, most of which were aluminum. The car was shortened and rear seats eliminated.
Other distinguishing features include the double bubble roof, aluminum drop down boot and a deeper variation of the traditional Aston Martin grill design. Ultimately, 99 were delivered and the 100th, a pre-production example, was retained by the factory.
