Ferrari's 40th-anniversary supercar and the last Enzo Ferrari-era model was the Ferrari F40. A total of 1,315 examples were built with 213 of those being U.S specification cars. Power was supplied by a mid-mounted dual overhead cam, 32-valve, 2,936cc V-engine fitted with Weber-Marelli engine management and port fuel injection. The engine was enhanced with twin IHI turbochargers and Behr air-to-air intercoolers which helped produce 471 bhp (SAE rating). The engine was mated to a five-speed manual gearbox and there were four-wheel ventilated hydraulic disc brakes, a limited-slip differential, and Speedline wheels with Pirelli P Zero tires.
This particular example is one of the 213 U.S specification cars that was completed by the factory in January of 1991. It left Maranello finished in rosso and upholstered with a matching cloth interior. It was delivered for retail on May 13th of 1991 to the Ferrari dealer Lake Forest Sports Cars, in Lake Forest, Illinois. Along with the standard F40 equipment, this car was given air conditioning and an electrically heated front windshield.
The first owner was Dennis Ahrens who took delivery on May 20th, 1991. He ordered the customized Schedoni fitted luggage option, as a pristine leather set with his name embroidered on it. Over the next 14 years, Mr. Ahrens used the car sparingly. Work during this period included a replacement of the ECU and injectors six months after the car's delivery (under warranty), a major cam belt service in 2004, and a factory-recall repair to the lower suspension forks in 2005, as well as intermittent fluid services.
The car entered storage around late-2005, and in April 2014, it returned to Lake Forest Sports Cars for sale. The car was purchased by the current owner, only the second owner, later that year, who immediately submitted it to the dealership for sympathetic freshening as needed. The work that followed included a belt service (including new timing and drive belts), replaced the plugs, flushed the brakes, gearbox, and cooling systems, and mounted proper new Pirelli P Zero Corsa tires. The original factory Pirelli tires showed so little use that they were retained with the car for possible exhibition purposes.
